I refer to the discussions before and after todays Texas Scramble with respect to whether a £1 entry fee was required when no use is made of the Club V1 system. I have discussed this with the Club President Jack Scott and the Gents Captain Fred Barber.
As background, entry fees are paid for Sunday mixed competitions that are not entered to the Club V1 system, and an entry fee of £1 per person is specified in the Rules & Conditions for Gents Competitions for Wednesday and weekend competitions (£2 for charity events), and for all knockout competitions. No mention is made of the use of the Club V1 system as a prerequisite and the Rules are silent with respect to Seniors Competitions. The entry fee is collected to go towards buying prizes (medals, vouchers etc.) and the costs of running competitions (which include the Club V1 system costs but Union Subs make up a substantial proportion).
The views of the President and the Captain are that the same rules should apply to all official gents Summer competitions that are contained in the Fixture Book including Senior Gents competitions regardless of whether entries are made to the Club V1 system.
My own view is that our club is basically there to provide a structure to enable members to play and enjoy competitive golf. The £25 annual club subscription provides a large chunk towards the cost of doing this and the entry fees for competitions provide the bulk of the rest; the principle of this being the more you play competitions the more you pay. I therefore concur with the views of the President and Captain. Having said this I believe the Rules & Conditions for Gents Competitions should be updated to include entry fees for Senior Gents and Mixed competitions and the current rates throughout. I will raise this at Committee.
